Keeping Up with the Kiddies

Yesterday Renee provided several excellent reasons why you people (and I say "you people" in the most loving way possible) should keep popping out those puppies, (my favorite, of course, being that the miracle of birth provides us well-entrenched single folk in cavair and champagne at the baby parties that inevitably precede or follow said miracle). And today, I follow with yet another reason why it's important to have those little ankle-biters around: they keep us rapidly aging oldies in the know.

Hard to believe, but at age 23 and two days, I was shocked (shocked!) to discover that I am now totally out of tune with youth culture. I just learned about a thing called SuDuko (sp?) that's apparently a HUMONGOUS trend, that a day ago I'd never even knew existed. What's more, this gap in my knowledge of all things "young'n'hip" has merely pulled one layer of onion skin away to reveal an entire universe of things I'm not aware of.

So okay, a test: How many of you out there know of Su Duko? How many of you have heard of My Space? Who's familiar with a Memory Stick? (and no, this neither refers to the 50 Cent song "Magic Stick," nor is it something you use to beat knowledge into another person.) Are you up on the DIY trend? Do you know what DIY stands for? (Nope, it's not Situation Normal All Fucked Up.)

Please, please tell me that I am not alone in my senior citizen ignorance... but if I am, I suppose the little comfort I have is in knowing that by tomorrow I'll have forgotten all about it.

I know what a memory stick is--but only since starting work in the magical world of PR. Oh wait, is that the thing in my camera. It has to do with technology and not Harry Potter, that much I know.

Soduko energy powers the commuter trains in Chicago. Apparently this morning's puzzle was very hard, because they had to cut power on my line for 40 minutes. Pencils ready people.

It's not a question of age, really. It's more a question of paying attention. I'm twice your age and then some and I knew all three (DIY is Do-It-Yourself, by the way).

That said, my daughter had to show me how to choose a non-embarrassing, non-girly ring for my cell phone. So you just have to pick your battles on keeping up with changing culture, I guess.

So a question for each of our respondents:

Leah (first HI! How are you?): V. curious to know what's magical in the world of PR these days, ie, what's the best dirt you can share with the readers of this blog -- and feel free to make shit up.

Anonymous: At what age do you start paying attention to a child's advice, ie, at what point do their suggestions stop being "adorable" and/or irritatingly precocious and actually become valuable pieces of information? (and okay, a second & third question for our in-the-know mom: what is a non-girly ring tone? and is the money spent on this particular ephemeral song clip a really good investment?)

I'm super! My biggest news is that I officially became a jew on Wednesday!

Biggest thing in PR, other than blogs, is canes. Think "Puttin' on the Ritz." Instead of samplings or giveaways or sweepstakes, companies are starting to recognize the value of a good dance with a cane. Messages that transcend languages can be conveyed about products and events through the morse code of cane-tapping. Some companies are considering tap dancing, but for the most part PR folks are promoting black tie cane dances.

Welcome to the tribe, Bubbeleh, and a hearty mazel tov to ya! Hope you're feeling at least a little more chosen than you were on Tuesday, and that with your new status as world scape goat, you've also been given the keys to the media world... I think I can now tell you, it's true, we do control the presses, but keep that one under your yarmulke.

And thank you for sharing the cane dancing ritual come back! Why, I was just thinking how much I missed the Mr. Peanut aesthetic (though not in bed), and was saying to myself, "Self, I think it's high time for Mr. Peanut to get himself out of rehab, don the top hat and spats, and shake his moneymaker with me." Yes, I was drunk at the time, but let's just think of it as another one of those arcane Jewish rituals.

Renee: good point! I now realize I'm not only out of it, I'm a sexist, too... though, hmm, I'll bet Leah would agree sexism has made a come back of its own of late, so maybe I'm more au courant than I realize. Next up is to make myself more in flagrante than I'm currently realizing.

Hi there. Do you know of other sites like this one (ballroom dancing) where I can meet other people interested in ballroom dancing?
Many thanks
