What Can Be Said?

Sadly those with the least lost the most, and if they didn't think the government cared about them before, well, now they know for sure. I can't begin to fathom the devastation the victims of Katrina have experienced, I can only pray things get better for them. And I can send money. You can, too, at these charities that are accepting donations for Hurricane relief:
The Red Cross
Habitat For Humanity
Charity Navigator

I keep thinking about the final chapters of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Or the mob scenes in War of the Worlds... At some level--I'm not surprised (by looting, by government paralyzation) and my lack of shock surprises me.

I also gave--turns out my company is matching donations to United Way. Too late, I donated to through the JUF.

I am horrified and disgusted by our government's response. And when I hear people say things like, "There was warning, those people should have gotten out" I want to scream. Do people not understand the level of poverty in New Orleans? Many of those stranded in the city had no cars, no bus fare. Some of them earn less than $10K a year before taxes. They live in housing projects, in utter, horrific poverty.

You know, where has Cheney been during all of this? We've heard nothing from that MoFo this whole time.

The grim upside is that outrage like yours--and mine--is growing. Bush is under attack, FEMA is under attack, and the attacks are apolitical and legitimate--this isn't about scoring political points. The grim reality is that it's too late, that 20,000 troops on Tuesday, instead of yesterday, might have prevented deaths, looting, chaos, fires, putrid rotting. It took 48 hours for the massive food drops to arrive in Aceh...why are people still starving in the Convention Center? In the richest developed country in the world?

Heard Bush on the radio yesterday, saying that, well, there was some destruction, yes, and it was truly horrible, but, you know what? We will rebuild. Right now people are looking around their neighborhoods, seeing that their houses are destryed, seeing the rubble, but we're working hard (his all-time favorite phrase, I swear!) and this is actually a blessing, because so much good will come from this destruction, and those people who are looking at their houses now, will one day rebuild, and they'll be standing on the porches of new houses, houses that are better than they ever were before.

I wanted to scream. Does he not realize that people died? Those lives are irreplacable. Does he not realize how much it must burn those thousands of people who don't have renters' insurance, or whose current insurance will not cover the loss? What about those who had to leave behind pets? They won't be good as new. He's so oblivious! Not everyone will be able to get back to the level they were before, let alone rebuild and be smiling and serene, a year from now, standing on the porch of a house that is better than the one that was destroyed. What planet is he on???

I know, I hope like hell the outrage will be enough to actually DO something. As far as I'm concerned, Bush should be impeached over this. Clinton lied about getting a blow job, and he was impeached. I feel like those cheesy bumper stickers, but "When Clinton lied, no one died." The ridiculous response in New Orleans just shows how disorganized and uncaring this administration is. Like you said, where were the National Guard troops on Tuesday? Where were the 'Berlin drops' of food, water, and medical supplies?
